I, for one, think Stephen hit it right on the head.  Almost every resource book I've ever looked at follows the same practice.

CORBIS sells images and requires attribution. I assume CZ will not be buying images from Corbis on anyone else. It is not the custom in the academic world to provite attributions to the provider of public domain images -- we do NOT cite the library which provided the book we scanned, for example. Their is no reason to do so and it misleads users into thinking they must get permission to reuse an image.

At the risk of repeating myself, may I remind you all that this is about constructing a CZ policy on PD image use? In other words, the opinions of CZ Editors and particularly of Ed. Council members are paramount, since there are few [if any] legal issues to contend with. This is not to rule out the views of authors, but generally the editors have much more experience and expertise in this matter.

Thus, the determination of standard practice is not going to be made in this Forum, unless we have a large numbers of Editors contributing to the debate. As i have already explained, the majority of Editors is clearly opposed to image provider attribution under the actual image. One of the reasons for this is clear: that it implies a legal claim by that end-provider which is not there. All of these images are public domain.

On the other hand, the need for CZ to show some courtesy to image providers is accepted by the majority of Editors [although with serious reservations about Google Book]. Thus, a suitable compromise is to record that courtesy TWICE -- once on the actual image page and also as a footnote like normal references.
