Wasn't sure what the advantage of using webcitation.org for references would be (I note Stephen Ewen's recent edit on the [[anthropology]] page).  I can't seem to get that link to resolve, by the way; I get a time-out, and have for a while now.  If online sources are available, great, but I tend to be conservative about references, so I'd prefer some reducndancy by having us give both the citation in the original source, and then a link if an on-line version is available.  This redundancy is also useful for someone who has printed something out and then is away from the net; they still have a useful reference.

Thoughts?

That was just a fluke. I have never encountered them to have a server problems in the past. I think the justification for use of http://webcitation.org is clear and compelling.

Now that I can get to the webcitation.org website, the justification for using the service seem sensible enough.  However, I've always preferred articles that include (in their text) the original print references, not just a link to online versions/copies, for the reasons already mentioned.  Is there a compelling reason for not having such redundancy?

We might want to keep a link to the live site.  Maybe we could append a short piece to the citation so that it would be:

[http://sfaa.net/sfaagoal.html]. Archived at webcitation.org [http://www.webciatation.org/5NITkfKJa March 31, 2007].

The "Archived at webcitation.org..." part would replace the traditional "Accessed..."

Or maybe this would be slightly better:

[http://sfaa.net/sfaagoal.html]. [http://www.webciatation.org/5NITkfKJa Archived] at webcitation.org  March 31, 2007.

I submitted an application to webcite to try and get a communications channel open.  I like the idea, but the amount of traffic generated may overwhelm webcite. Lets get this moving.

I see you liked my suggestion, Steve. Wink

The two external links in a row make it look a little little less than attractive but I think we get the most information in the most compact format this way...

I'm tempted to suggest that we condense our format even further so that the whole citation would look like this:

Society for Applied Anthropology. Purpose and Vision. [http://sfaa.net/sfaagoal.html Electronic document.] [http://www.webcitation.org/5NITkfKJa Archived] March 31, 2007.

My reason is that very long web addresses are shortened this way (because most won't be as neat as our example).  The problem, of course, is that printed versions of the article won't show any actual information to help people find the page.  Thoughts?

Yea, sounds good.
