As I understand it as a new member, Approved CZ articles will have "unapproved" versions for changes to be made freely. Approved content can then be spliced into the approved page by an editor.

The comparison feature: (found in the history section of an article) will be very important in this model fro seeing how the approved version differs from the other one.

Here's the problem: it doesn't work that well. The highlighting system can be confusing and unclear. Is there a way for the same sort of highlighting, but in the final rendered form? Or, can the preview and compare tools be combined in some way?

I have no clue, so I'm asking.

Well, hypothetically, we can do whatever we want in terms of improving MediaWiki, including working on the difference engine.  However,  I think that it's more likely that any changes in that area will filter down from work done by the MediaWiki team.  They have a lot more developer time (in developer-hours/month) and a lot more expertise with MediaWiki.  Our tech guys are still working on the tech support angle of getting everything working fully on our system, and we still have a nice long list of tech stuff to handle outside of the bugs.

The short answer is Database modificiations are required to create an "Edit Queue." This requires some serious code hacking.
