Yes. Hayford, Roger and I had this conversation through email and we decided that Roger was correct to leave the lower case, but remove the "dr." (as we have chosen not to include titles, etc.). I acted too quickly in changing the name to caps, essentially faltering in my responsibility of at least verifying whether the name should be changed. We decided that, next time, I won't be changing names unilaterally at least. The exact reason that the use of the "Rename" feature is restricted. I blew it! Now if the community wants to make some guidelines, that would be okay with me.

The only guideline I can think of is that we absolutely cannot let ourselves descend into the WP-like chaos of names in colors, with sparklers, etc. etc. As long as the full and verifiable name is there, I don't care whether it's in caps or not. Personally, I think it's an affected mannerism, but if people want to do it, let 'em -- like dying their hair green and putting a red iron spike through their nose: chacun a son (mauvais) gout....

I think you should assume that people have normal names with upper case, unless they insist otherwise. If their names are of non-standard format, they should be used to that problem by now.
There is one guy in the UK who changed his surname to 6, and I had to reference something by him. The journal editor (without asking me) deleted the 6 as a typo and left me with a nonsense reference to someone's Christian name.

Do changes to user names effect their login data? Then they have to be warned!

There have only been three or four name changes in the last couple of years that I'm aware of. I assume that if they couldn't log in afterwards we would eventually would have heard about it....

I'm not sure, but I send them emails letting them know anyway. In the doctor's case I let him know why we took off the title as well.

I think I noticed more than four, and all of them seemed to have login problems afterwards.

Ah, is there a list somewhere? I'd like to know where, so I can put a link to it on the Constables' private page.

Sure, just change my name to Hayford Pierce, the way most people have spelled it for 65 years. Whadda I care? (My cousin, Michael Peirce, who took the great photo of his father at the Waldo Peirce article, finally just gave up and stopped trying to correct people.

Hmmm, we Kops are *so* dumb! Where exactly is the user move log? CZ is a labyrinth buried in a cavern lost in a maze....
