I've been getting lessons from WP's Durova (one of the few wikipedians I trust these days) in image restoration techniques. I'm still not an expert at it, but if anyone wants me to take a crack at an image I'm game.

Possibly sometime in the future, we could set up some sort of image workshop where people can ask for images to be touched up or restored.

Wow, Drew, that sounds great!  Keep working in that direction and maybe we can incorporate the whole copyright checking process into that part of the project.

Yeah, Sounds good. Check out my [http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/User:Drew_R._Smith/Restoration_Projects First attempt] at restoration. I think I did a pretty good job eh?

Yeah, so good that it almost seems like it should be illegal!

It must be a joke -- I went to Drew's page as cited above and saw nothing but the title....

You saw nothing but the title... Meaning the pictures weren't there? Try this one http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/User:Drew_R._Smith/Restoration_Projects

Nope, not that I know of. I've just had some problems in the past with copyvios at WP, and since then I've been trying to stay well away from copyrighted material.

Now that that's out of the way, I had the idea of setting up the copyright checking part of the workshop now, instead of waiting until we can get the whole thing going. I've already got some experience checking for copyrights and obtaining permission to use media that is copyrighted. I don't want to go to all the trouble to set it up though if no one is going to use it. How often would people actually use it right now?

Hi, Drew, this time I found the five pix -- the restorations were terrific!

Let us just say that copyrights are very important here.  Stephen Ewen was our copyright expert, but has gone on to get his PhD.  See this thread:

And the Media Assetts workgroup that he was in the midst of starting before his untimely loss:

So anybody have any objections to me starting this up again? Or starting something similar, because I like the concept, but the layout is attrocious in my opinion.

I say go for it.  Just keep in mind that it's not official until it's made it through the political process... whatever that may end up being.  Stephen was working in that direction at last look.  Your welcome to work it in any direction you feel will help.  You might consider asking for input along the way from those that use a lot of images, especially the editors.  Just keep the copyrights as your first duty - some editors are not careful about makin gsure they have followed procedures, though.  We want to be above board on everything we bring in.

Absolutely. I could also, if pointed to a list of images, go through the ones we have and make sure the copyrights are specified and correct.
