I have seen many photos in Flickr that would be useful in CZ. But I can't determine which are available for such use. The all seem to be marked "© All rights reserved".

Where do I look for Flickr photos that can be used?

Go to the advanced search option, here: http://www.flickr.com/search/advanced/

Scroll to the bottom after you've typed your search terms and check the box that says "Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content"

Thanks, Joe. I still have a problem. For example, I want to use the photo at http://www.flickr.com/photos/skrewtape/2012056555/ which I found by searching the Creative Commons-licensed content. The photo is tagged as "Some restrictions" and when I click on that, I am told that Attribution is necessary. That's my problem ... all I can find is that it was uploaded by "Screwtape" (obviously not a real name) and I can find no way to contact him/her to ask what attribution is wanted. What do I do? Do I upload it to CZ and then create a credit line for "Screwtape" ? Or do I simply create a credit line for "Flickr" ? Or what?

When I use Flickr i only take photos from users with a real name.  You could e-mail screwtape and ask for permission?

Chris, I finally learned how to find email addresses of the photographers on Flickr. When you click on their photo or avatar, you get a dropdown list that includes his/her Yahoo mail address.

In my experience, people are usually willing to provide their real names if you explain how excited you are about using their work.  The process is slow sometimes, though, because a lot of people do not regularly check the messages they receive on flickr.  Of course, the good news is that we can always add another photo whenever we get a reply.  it took months to get a reply on this one but I think it was worth the wait.

Actually, shouldn't they check that box, and the two further boxes that are no longer greyed out when that box is checked?

The upload page on another big wiki project has a link to a tool called flinfo.  This flinfo tool will take a flickr image, figure out if it has a CC liscence compatible with free enough re-use for a project like our, and emits all the code necessary for the image page -- for that other wiki.

The template for that other wiki is not that different from the {{Image_notes_flickr2}} template we use.
If you tell the Citizendium upload wizard you are uploading a flickr image it provides you with an edit box with an unpopulated {{Image_notes_flickr2}} template.

  • You can paste in the description emitted by flinfo underneath the Citizendium template.
  • The Citizendium's template has three required fields with the same name as the other project's template.
  • The Citizendium's template has a "Flickr source page" -- the other project's template just calls that field the "Source" field, already filled out with the flickr source page.
  • The Citizendium's template has both an "Author profile link" field in addition to an "Author" field.  The emission from flinfo puts the information we want in the two fields in its Author field.
    • erase the closing }} of the Citizendium template and the opening line of their template
    • copy their source info from their Source field to the Citizendium Flickr source page field.
    • copy the info from their Author field to the Citizendium Author profile link field
    • delete all the blank fields
    • you don't have to select a liscense, it selected the appropriate liscence already.
    • the emitted text may have [[Category:]] lines.  delete these too

I think this is less work than filling out the Citizendium template from scratch.
