what discipline should it belong to? I know it through both political science and economics... but I suppose it belongs somewhere specifically!

I think this is a great idea.  It will a enable a writer to get all of his or her thoughts down before the red pencils come out.  Reviewing the document as a whole should reduce superfluous edits, resulting in a more coherent and higher quality product.  This is particularly true in the current environment where there appears to be great interest in writing articles on controversial subjects.  All to often they get bogged down by editorial sniping.  A protected environment for the incubation of ideas might help lower the temperature and improve the product.  Only issue could be the memory required to hold all of these articles in process.  Will there be a kill date?  Very creative, Larry.

Thanks for the feedback and welcome to the project, Mr. Falter!  We love our retired history buffs.   Grin

Why should there be a kill date?  The immediate function of the articles is simply for an author to represent his or her own best work.  As such the page could live forever, theoretically.

Clearly a diversion to the CZ mission of producing general encyclopedia articles.  This is best left to a separate project.

I agree with Stephen on this one. At least, these articles with no editorial oversight should be clearly delineated and separated from Citizendium, because it would be hard to argue that we aim to become reliable if such articles are allowed in. It may indeed lead to an influx of authors and it will not do much harm if it's kept at some distance, so I don't see a reason to oppose the idea, but I do think I'll ignore it.

Generally, I think there are too many initiatives and too little working on the encyclopaedia (taken broadly to include supporting the people that need guidance). See also Aleta's post in another thread:

I've gotten I think my third e-mail from a young CZer saying we talk too much and nothing gets done and he's leaving.

I realize that my post here contradicts this sentiment, so I started an article on zero-sum game (I picked economics and mathematics, in that order, as workgroups). Wouldn't it be nice if everybody making a post in this thread improves that article (or some other article)?

I Just hit "random page" six times and came up with six items I could not add to!  Oh dear!

Because they are too specialised?

Affirmative.

One a Korean University, then physics, computers and maths, and subpages.

Tried it again--more subpages.

After reading the first 3 pages of comments, I'm FOR the proposal, with the caveat that these things need to be carefully differentiated from the main wiki.  It sounds fun, and I think it might attract authors.

Well, Aleta, I got mostly American politics things [which I dare not touch], something on Peel's Principles [about the Metropolitan Police] which I slightly altered, and an article by Hayford Pierce about his uncle [which I also dared not touch although I saw typos in it, Hayford Cheesy].

Perhaps you click on the button in a way that produces subpages? LOL

Yeah, well you can laugh, but I wouldn't be surprised!  Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean people aren't really out to get me!  Tongue

If it makes you feel any better I got three subpages after hitting it about seven times.  Strangely, I retrieved the "unused" flavor ONLY, what are the odds of that? (I don't want to know the real odds Wink )

Could someone please put in a feature request, removing certain categories of page from the random page button?

For example, if they can remove articles under a certain size, that would be good.  But at the very least we need to remove the unused and approval subpages!!!
